How Essential is the Resurrection of Jesus?

Dear New Hope Family,

I want to share with you a message I have taught in various churches. I hope it encourages you, as well as give you something to share with your family and friends.

How Essential is the Resurrection of Jesus?

One of the central teachings of the Bible is that Jesus literally, bodily rose from the dead. There are many theories that attempt to discredit this truth, but far more evidences that support the resurrection of Jesus.   But, let’s assume, for a moment, that Jesus really did not rise from the dead…what would that mean? The apostle Paul tells us in 1 Cor 15 what it would mean…and it is bad news!

1 COR 15:12-58

BAD NEWS:   IF CHRIST IS NOT RISEN (VS 12-19)

  • Vs 14 Our preaching is useless – it is worthless, hopeless, of no avail. We are wasting our time telling others about Jesus.
  • Vs 17a Our faith is futile – it’s pointless, in vain, having no value. We are we are only fooling ourselves to put our own faith in a dead Jesus, who no longer exists.
  • Vs 17b We are still in our sins – without the resurrection of Jesus, there is no forgiveness, no salvation, no relationship with God.   Rom 4:25 says that “Jesus was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.” IE His death and resurrection reconcile us to God.
  • Vs 18 We are lost – condemned to an eternal hell, forever separated from God.
  • Vs 19 We, of all men, are most to be pitied – we have deluded ourselves putting our faith in a deception.

GOOD NEWS: HE IS RISEN (VS 20)…AND BECAUSE HE IS RISEN

  • We have good news to proclaim.
  • Our faith is alive and genuine.
  • Our sins are forgiven.
  • We are saved unto eternal life.
  • We of all men, are most to be envied, because our faith is in the resurrected Jesus.

HERE IS EVEN MORE GOOD NEWS…BECAUSE JESUS LIVES, WE TOO WILL LIVE FOREVER (1 COR 15:21-58)

  • Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we, who put our faith in Him, will be raised from the dead to spend eternity with Him. Sadly, those who do not put their faith in Jesus, will spend eternity separated from God.
  • God’s promise is found in Rom 10:9-10  If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Wishing you a blessed Easter
