WHAT’S NEW AT NEW HOPE FAMILY FUN DAY:

What a great way to celebrate all the new and exciting changes at NHCS, as well as the end to a terrific year, by having a Family Fun Day! Join us this Sunday, May 20th, 12:30-3:30, here at the school. A BBQ lunch (cheeseburger or hot dog, chips, sundae cup, and soda) will be available for $3.50, or you’re welcome to bring a picnic lunch. There will be music, games, popcorn, cotton candy, and more! Don’t miss it! This is also a great time to bring any family that may be interested in seeing what New Hope is all about.

JOG-A-THON RESULTS:

The Jog-A-Thon on April 27th was a huge success! The elementary students raised money for our roof project by running the New Hope track for 1 hour. They earned nearly $6,000.

All of the students ran their hearts out, and we are all very proud of them!

Students who did 20 laps (20 laps = 5 miles) or more were 6th graders Jake Barth (1st place in total laps with 24) and Cobey Giesler (2nd place in total laps with 22); 5th graders Teagan Danner, Jonathan Shields, Becca Loper, Jacob Dryden, and Andrew Martin; 4th grader Noah Sullivan; 3rd graders Joseph Dirling and Marquel Padilla; 2nd grader Stephanie Johnson; and 1st grader Lucy Maxwell.

The overall top earner was 3rd grader Joseph Dirling! The top earners for each grade were Jaxon Perkins (Kind), Cody McCoy (1st), Kelly Crisp (2nd), Joseph Dirling (3rd), Maria Nevills (4th), Jessica Loper (5th), and Lilly Melvin (6th).

Great job by all the students, staff, and parents who participated in this PTF-sponsored event! Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who helped organize the event, keep track of laps run, serve snacks, and encourage all to do their best.

JR. KINDERGARTEN NEWS FOR THE 2012-13 SCHOOL YEAR:

We will be separating the Jr Kindergarten from the Kindergarten class next year. The options (3-day mornings, 3-day full day, 5-day mornings, and 5-day full day) will remain the same as they are this year for those students who are 4 years old by Sept. 1. We are opening up the 3-day and 5-day mornings options to students who are 3 years old by Sept. 1. The Jr Kindergarten class will be a great program for kids to come and have fun, learn, and play together.

Emily Dourte will be coming to teach this class. She has been working with young children for seven years and has her Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. She has about one year left for her Bachelor of Arts in Child Development and Family Studies. She and her fiancé Tim Hillier, a New Hope graduate, are arriving in Oregon mid-June and will be here at New Hope with our summer school program. She would love to hear from parents with any comments, concerns, or questions, or just to chat and get to know you all!

CONGRATULATIONS TO CHRIS MERLOS:

Only students involved in a school sponsored activity, such as athletes at after school practice, are covered by our liability insurance. All non-athletes should be picked up after school or be under parent supervision if here at school. (The exception to this policy is carpoolers living out of the area or those who simply cannot make more than one trip to the school. We will let those students study in the cafeteria until the practice is over.) After an activity or practice, student(s) must wait in the cafeteria. Thank you for your cooperation.

Summer school will be offered through the Learning Center. We will be available Monday-Thursday from 9am-1pm starting June 18th. The purpose of summer school is to allow students to complete course work, recover credit for incompletes or an F, to raise their semester grade in math to allow them to advance (Students below a ‘C’ in a math course cannot go on to the next level), and to enter the new school year with improved skills and/or understanding of course material so they are prepared to focus on the future progress, not concerned with past shortcomings. It will be offered to students of all grades at a minimal cost.
Over the past few weeks, I have been communicating with NWAC (Northwest Accreditation Commission), who were recommended to us by the University of Oregon. NWAC is a regional accrediting body for primary and secondary schools in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

Their website address is: www.northwestaccreditation.org
The Oregon website is www.nwacoregon.org

At their encouragement, Marsha and I filled out their application and did a school self-study based on NWAC’s “Standards and Annual Report Form”. This report assesses whether or not a school meets their accreditation standards.

On Friday, May 4, Dr. Dick Darst (Oregon State Director of NWAC) and Dr. Phil Meager (Regional Consultant for So. Oregon NWAC) made a site visit to our school. They spent several hours with Joesett Dirling (School Board Member), Marsha (Assistant Administrator), and me. During their visit:

They reviewed our report, asked a number of questions, made a number of observations, and made some very helpful suggestions.

We then took them on an extensive tour of our school, where they had opportunity to meet and talk with staff, students, and parents.

At the end of the day, Dick and Phil met with Marsha, Joesett, and me to give us their final assessment.

Results:

They were very impressed with our school. Throughout the day, they continually commended our:

Staff, students, and parents

School atmosphere for radiating a sense of safety and caring, even stating that New Hope is obviously a great place to educate students

Academic program, number of electives, and extra curricular activities offered

Website, facilities, International Student’s program, and numerous other commendations

Marsha, Joesett, and I were continually impressed with their professional, yet caring and helpful demeanor.

At our final assessment meeting, the team gave us their decision:

New Hope has gone through the initial accreditation site visit with the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC).

The visiting team is recommending to NWAC that New Hope receive a provisional accreditation.

This means that our accreditation would be good for the next two years. We will put together and work with a School Improvement Plan to prepare for a full external team visit by June of 2014, which will enable us to continue our accreditation status for another six years.

The team is confident that their recommendation for New Hope’s accreditation will be approved by the commission. However, formal notification of our accreditation will be sent to us pending the commission’s final review and approval of the team’s recommendation, at their June 18 NWAC’s meeting.

The team recommended that we make our accreditation retroactive to the beginning of our current 2011-2012 school year. This year’s seniors would then graduate from New Hope as an accredited school. We agreed, believing this to be wise counsel.

They also suggested that we consider accrediting the entire K-12 school, not simply the high school. Our initial plan was high school only, but will certainly include our entire secondary now. We will also consider our entire K-12, depending on other factors.

As of July 1, NWAC becomes part of AdvancEd (a nationwide association). I will communicate more about this and how it will affect New Hope’s accreditation after receiving official notice from AdvancEd.

The accreditation team’s May 4th decision is the result of God’s grace and divine leading. It is also the result of our entire staff, school families, and school board’s commitment and professionalism. I praise God for His leading and am so pleased with all of you. Kudos to each of you!

Continuing in His Grace,

Ernie Stone
Administrator

On behalf of the board I wish to say thank you for taking the time to respond to our recent online questionnaire. Your input was most helpful in giving us a general sense of the thoughts and feelings of our New Hope Family with respect to the new direction in which our school is going. While certainly, and thankfully, some of the comments pointed out areas in which we need to continue to improve, the overwhelming impression was that our New Hope families are pleased. A great deal of the credit for this goes to our interim administrator, Mr. Ernie Stone. Ernie has worked very very hard and we appreciate him tremendously. In all honesty, if the Lord had not given us Ernie it would have been very difficult, if not impossible, for us to be where we are, doing what we are doing. Thank you Ernie.

At present the board is working hard to lay firm foundations for moving forward in pursuit of our mission of equipping students for lives that are pleasing to Jesus. Some of that work involves building a solid structure for board operations; that is, developing policies that will govern and guide the daily operations of the school under the direction of our administrator. We appreciate your prayers for us in this regard.

New Hope Christian School is a gift from God. It is an instrument that He has raised up for the purpose of equipping those students that He sends us for lives that are productive in His vineyard. We are glad that you are part of that. And we thank you for the role that you are playing.

Serving together with you,

Guy Shields, Board chairman

In February, the Josephine County Food Bank sounded the alarm concerning their pantry inventories. The food bank was extremely low on peanut butter, which is one of the most important needed staples. The food bank feeds over 13,000 people per month in Josephine County. In a practical expression of the New Hope motto “We > Me”, New Hope responded with the gifts and talents they possess.

The Art classes led the way with painting collection barrels, adding their flare to the cause. Mrs. Lisa Ward, who was in charge of the event, said, “Earlier in the year, Sarah Jane Smith, an Ameri Corp volunteer at the Josephine County Food Bank, asked our high school art class to paint the barrels that the Food Bank uses to collect food. Our high school students painted 10 barrels in the fall. Eight students came out on a day off of school to paint! We then extended the project to elementary classes. Grades 2 – 6 each painted one or more barrels for a total of 12 barrels. Look for the barrels in markets and stores around Grants Pass!”

Then the student body was called upon to start filling the barrels. “Sarah Jane also asked us to collect peanut butter since the Food Bank no longer gets as much peanut butter through government subsidies. The entire school got involved in bringing jars of peanut butter during the month of February.” According to Ward, the school collected approximately 100 jars of peanut butter. Mrs. Ward went on to compliment the high school Leadership class. “They did an excellent job with promoting this drive.”

Founded in 1961, New Hope Christian School was the product of a joint effort among local churches and World Missions to Children. Last school year, the school celebrated its 50th anniversary of service to the community. New Hope offers classes from Junior Kindergarten (age 4) through grade 12 as well as an active sports program.

The theme at New Hope this year is “What’s NEW at New Hope”. The school now offers a modified block schedule and several new electives that will cater to students and homeschoolers. A tutoring/learning center is also offered to assist students on every level.

Principal Ernie Stone and New Hope Christian School invite calls to the school at (541) 476-4588 or a visit to the school’s website at www.newhopechristian.net.

While many of the pastors from Church of the Valley attended, the invitations included leaders from Youth for Christ, Child Evangelism, Gospel Rescue Mission and other pastors from Grants Pass, Rogue River and Gold Hill.

Principal Ernie Stone said, “…it was a superb event. We had a full-on program from elementary students, secondary choir, and Culinary Arts cooking breakfast.“ The program presented by New Hope students, teachers, and parents included a short devotional from Mr. Stone, several elementary classes reciting verses or singing songs, a song presented by the secondary choir, a music video, and a tour of the campus. Mr. Stone went on to say, “Feedback from the pastors was very positive. A big thank you to all who gave of their time and efforts to make this event happen.”

Last school year the school celebrated its 50th anniversary of service to the community. New Hope offers classes from Junior Kindergarten (age 4) through grade 12 as well as an active sports program.

The theme at New Hope this year is “What’s NEW at New Hope”. The school now offers a modified block schedule and several new electives that cater to students and home schoolers. A tutoring/learning center is also offered to assist students on every level.
