Mrs. Dorothea Harvey

Mrs. Dorthea Harvey¡Hola!  What started as an interest and desire to learn the Spanish language turned into a full-time teaching career.  God opened unexpected doors for me, and I absolutely love that He has led me to teach at New Hope Christian School.

I was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California.  I attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ornamental Horticulture.  For nine years after graduating, I managed the greenhouses and gardens for the Biological Sciences Department at the University of California in Irvine.

After moving to Grants Pass in 1990, I taught Spanish for Rogue Community College, R.E.A.D Institute, Three Rivers School District, and NHCS.  I’m often asked how I learned to speak Spanish.  Well, I took a Spanish class every school year, starting in the sixth grade! During my college years, I participated in a Spanish immersion program in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and my summer horticultural jobs in California always gave me the opportunity to practice speaking Spanish. After college I continued taking advanced Spanish classes, and I traveled quite a bit throughout Mexico.

In addition to teaching at New Hope, I teach a night course in Spanish conversation for RCC. This will be my 16th year involved in community education.  I have taught at NHCS for 8 years.  My husband Art and I enrolled our two daughters at New Hope in 2002, and within a year, God had a place there for me as well.  I teach Life Science, Basic Math, Geography, and Spanish, and I am ACSI teacher certified.

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, gardening, traveling, reading, watching movies, boating, and being with my students.  It is a blessing to be with students and staff who share a love for Jesus Christ and are dependent upon the Word of God as it applies to all aspects of their lives.  “Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to your truth!  Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you.”  Psalm 86:11
