Think
of the Possibilities…
New
Hope Christian School has developed a distance education program that
encourages college-bound students to pursue college courses while enrolled
in high school. In addition to college credit, each student receives full
high school credit for successful completion of each college course.
By
taking just one college course per quarter during the junior and senior
years, a high school student can complete 18 college credits,
fully-accredited and transferable.
Why Take
College Courses in High School?
Taking
online college courses helps students to learn advanced computer skills,
time management, personal responsibility for their own learning, and
confidence in their ability to perform college-level academic work.
How
Does the Program Work?
Currently,
we are cooperating with Chemeketa Community College in Salem to offer most
courses by online computer access. Chemeketa has become the leader in online
education in Oregon, offering 140 courses. Courses are taught by experienced
instructors who facilitate lectures, homework, group discussions, and
tests—all online. Most NHCS students will complete their courses by
working in the NHCS computer lab. A home computer will be an asset, but is
not required.
What Courses are Available?
Courses
are available in English, writing, mathematics, health & fitness,
science, computer applications, business operations, Bible and Christian
Education, and various electives. Online classes are equivalent to on-campus
college courses in content and assignments. Courses are selected that meet
both NHCS diploma requirements and college degree requirements.

What
Does It Cost?
Online
community college courses generally cost about $40 per credit, and most
courses are 3 credits. In addition, most courses require a textbook (books
may be purchased online from several sources), and some courses have
additional fees. Average cost per course will range from $150-200. Fees are
much higher for online courses from four-year colleges. Course fees are
normally paid in advance. High school students do not qualify for financial
aid.
How
Do Students Apply, Register, and Pay for Courses?
Application
is free of charge. Application requires completion of a Student Record Form
(one page), Underage Student Consent Form (parental permission), and taking
a placement test (usually at Rogue Community College). Students usually
register and pay for community college courses using a touchtone telephone
registration system. Payment is accepted by credit card or by personal
check.
When
are College Courses Taken?
Students
may register for college courses year round, during the college Summer,
Fall, Winter, or Spring quarters. The Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters
correspond closely to the regular two-semester high school schedule.
Students will work out their class schedule in advance with their high
school advisor at New Hope. Students may still take regular high school
classes while enrolled in one or more college courses.
How
Can a Student Qualify?
Students
wishing to enroll in this program are carefully screened. Before enrolling
in online college courses, students should be familiar with basic computer
and Internet functions. Those exhibiting superior academic achievement and
goal-oriented study habits may qualify to participate. Distance education
students are accepting a high level of personal responsibility for their
education and their future
